Self-Care During COVID-19: Important for Everyone

With many people working on the front line as essential workers, working remotely, or now unemployed due to COVID-19, it is extremely important that we remember to take care of ourselves.

When COVID-19 first began, I wrote a blog sharing how I was taking care of myself at the start of social distancing. It was February in Boston, and we had snow on the ground. Were now headed into Autumn, and I continue to be thankful to have favorable weather for time outdoors.

We are now six months into this pandemic, and we have moved through the end of winter, the spring, and summer seasons. With 6 months of experience with this pandemic, working remotely and continuing to practice social distancing, here are some tips and ways I continue to take care of myself to continue to maintain good health and thrive.

Meditate - One daily habit I have been working to build is meditation. I recommend the HeadSpace App, especially for those of you who are currently unemployed, as it is available at no cost for one year. This is a huge value that can help many people! For those who are still employed there is a free trial of the HeadSpace app. There are also many free YouTube videos on how to get started with meditation.

Journal – I write in my journal each morning and have for a number of years. I write about five things I'm grateful for, five things that would be great to have happen in the day, and five things that I Am (5-5-5). Using this structure for my journaling helps me to reflect back on the past with gratitude, set my intentions for the day, and check in with the present moment. I use an app, Journey, on my Samsung Tablet with stylist so I can hand write out my thoughts and feelings each morning. Starting my day with journaling is a helpful start.

Walking, jogging, hiking or running - Whether walking on my treadmill when the weather is too hot or rainy, or running in my neighborhood or local track, I enjoy running, walking and hiking. It is great for both physical and mental health. I often listen to audio books or podcasts when I run / walk / hike.  

Cycling - Biking is my favorite outdoor activity. In winter, I ride on a bike trainer inside. In Spring, Fall and Summer, I switch between my road bike, mountain bike, and my electric bike, depending on the location and distance. Especially now, with people being nervous to take public transit, cycling is a great way to disconnect, travel and find adventure. Check out my recent blog for Bike Commuting Tips during COVID-19.


Kayaking - I kayak year round, in the ocean, rivers, and lakes. When home in the Boston area, I paddle the Charles River or Mystic Lakes. On Cape Cod, I like to explore Sipson Island, as it just became open to the public this summer after private ownership for over 300 years! I love to paddle with friends, as I can safely stay socially distanced. In the winter months, I wear a full dry suit to keep safe and warm.

Gardening - When COVID-19 first began, I started a small garden.  We now have four small gardens at our home with vegetables and flowers. Even simply growing some herbs in pots in your kitchen window can be the start to gardening. Gardening reminds me to be patient, and also celebrate the results of a longer term project. We have already harvested basil in a wonderful pesto, and are waiting for some of our others to finish growing.  Learn more in this short blog about our garden adventures.

Reading - I love to read and have already read 35 books this year! I also read blogs and articles to stay current on what is happening in the world and the USA during COVID. Here is a recent blog where I shared 10 books I recommend on topics of coaching, leadership, and social justice.

Napping - Especially early on during the pandemic, I noticed that I was a bit more tired. I assumed that this was because of the stress watching the news and trying to stay updated on what was going on with COVID-19 in our country. I recognized this right away when social distancing began, and I have allowed myself to take naps, typically in the afternoon. Not having to travel for client projects has given me a bit more flexibility and time in the day. I am a big fan of naps! zzzzzzz
