Digital Learning Design 2: New Learning During the Pandemic
In late Spring, I participated in a training workshop on Digital Learning Design offered by Dr. Allana Todman-Da Graca, founder of Turning on the Lights Global Institute. With her 20+ years of experience in designing digital learning and as a contributor to The SAGE Encyclopedia of Online Education, I felt that I was in good hands to build these skills.
After completing Dr. Allana’s workshop, I took my background and experience of 20+ years of designing Adult Learning and built a digital course Optimism, Resilience, and Grit: Sustaining Success at Work and Home. That course was released in June 2020. This specific topic is always important, and even more timely with the effects of COVID-19. This course helps learners build their positivity for the long term; key skills for both leaders and individual contributors, as well as family members.
Since launching my first digital course with great success, I decided to build another digital course: Mentor Program Design with Strong ROI. Mentor programs design is an area in which I frequently support clients.
Mentor programs have provided solutions for clients, whether they are trying to:
Immerse new hires into their culture
Reduce turnover
Build effective leaders as a part of succession planning
Share the unique skill sets that high performers exhibit, or
Have leaders use their expertise to help develop a newer employees
I used Thinkific again for this course because I felt like I had gained so much knowledge from the first course and had a lot of confidence with using the software. This is an online platform that provides templates for laying out your course, and a FREE Fast-Track training course on how to use the software, price your class, and build a sales page. Thinkific is user-friendly and their tech support team is quick with responding to questions. Unlike other online learning platforms, Thinkific gives the user full control of the price and design of the course, which I really appreciate.
As a speaker and consultant on the topic of Mentor Program Design for many years, I already had most of the content ready for the digital course. I laid out the curriculum to make each lesson short and engaging, including quick videos, reflection exercises, quizzes, and TED Talks.
While designing this second course, I became much better at shooting video and using teleprompter tools to record some of my lessons. This allowed me to spend much less time on video edits. Shooting videos for my previous digital course in addition to filming past speaking engagements (which I post on my Youtube Channel) the edits were less intimidating. I use Power Director software for video editing.
Once I finished the draft of the course, I had multiple friends and mentors preview and test the content and sales page. This is very important when designing a digital course because you want to make it high quality and easy for the end user. Having done this once before with the other course, it was much faster as I used a similar layout. I welcome you to check out the sales page to see how I have laid it out.
I am proud to share my newest course, Mentor Program Design for Strong ROI. It took me a total of 3 weeks (part time) to build this three hour course! I love learning new skills, and am much more comfortable with designing Digital Learning courses now!
