I was kayaking with some friends who are advanced paddlers in the Nauset Marsh in Orleans and Eastham, MA, USA.

Pandemic Silver Linings and Positive Psychology

Building LGBTQ Resilience During COVID-19

Resilience has become a hot topic recently, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. LGBTQ+ people face constant change that can be unsettling. Years ago, I read the book Flourish by Dr. Martin Seligman (University of Pennsylvania). Known as the founder of Positive Psychology, Seligman’s research explains the importance of resilience. Resilience has become a hot topic recently in business. Organizations face constant change that can be unsettling to leaders and employees. Years ago, I read the book Flourish by Dr. Martin Seligman (University of Pennsylvania). Known as the founder of Positive Psychology, Seligman’s research, detailed in this book, explains the importance of resilience. Since then, I have studied and taught business leaders and organizations ways to strengthen resilience, especially through challenging organizational change. Unlike IQ, resilience is a skill that can be taught and developed. Seligman’s work produced a model for resilience called PERMA.

Hikes, Spikes and Resilience

I recently hiked Mt. Monadnock in southern New Hampshire with a friend. A few thousand feet into the 9-mile hike, we quickly realized that we were not going to be successful unless we changed our equipment because the entire trail had flooded and subsequently  frozen. We strapped on spikes or crampons and were much more successful with more appropriate gear. We also used trekking poles to keep balance.
